Liz on coming to Maggie’s every week

°ÄÃŲʿª½±, Glasgow

Liz and Dave enjoy time with their granddaughter at °ÄÃŲʿª½±

In 2015, my husband Dave was diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Since then he’s had numerous courses of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. He is on permanent chemotherapy that he has every day through a port.

Every two years or so, his chemotherapy starts to fail and they put him on a new one. He’ll keep having treatment until there is no longer any treatment that works.

The cancer has eaten away at his bones, so at points Dave had to use a wheelchair, for fear his hip would break if he walked. But Dave is so brave.

Finding Maggie’s

We have been through so many ups and downs, so many frightening experiences, so much lack of hope.

But it wasn’t until about two years ago that we started to come to Maggie’s. That’s when it started to become lighter.

We never thought Maggie’s was for us. I thought it was for people that had nobody to support them, and Dave had me, we have a family. We were just getting on with it on our own, but it wasn’t easy. It has been a really tough journey.

We went to °ÄÃŲʿª½± for the first time to get a blue badge. Doing it ourselves was a minefield of forms and we needed help.

We realised then that we could ask anything in Maggie’s, and we could find out anything we needed to know. But there is so much more to Maggie’s I was yet to discover.

Getting the support we need

We weren’t really going out very much, but we started coming to Maggie’s every week because it’s such a friendly, relaxed place. The door is open. The space is very peaceful, we feel relaxed here. When I’m waiting for Dave to do his exercise class on a Monday, I can sit and watch the squirrels in the garden.

It has become very important to us. We can come any time. The people are welcoming and they know you by name. They make me feel important, they make me feel hopeful.

I’ve met so many people here and Maggie‘s is a different thing to different people. Everything is accepted here; I love sitting at the table and chatting to people here for hours, but you can also sit in a chair and shut your eyes.

It’s a home from home. You leave with a wee lift.

Whether it’s you, the person with cancer or their friends and family, you matter to Maggie’s and you can rely on them.

They understand that it’s not just about the patient and everybody needs support.

They’re there for you, all the time. Nothing's too much trouble for them. The people at Maggie’s are very special people.
